Frequently asked questions.

How do I wash my board?

To get the most life out your board, please remember that the boards should not be submerged in water. Instead, to clean your board after use:

  1. Moisten a paper towel to wipe off your board immediately after use.
  2. Additionally, (especially if you have been putting meat on the boards) you can use a liberal amount of dish soap, use the gentle side of a sponge, rinse, and dry.
  3. If your board does not have feet it is important to place a towel under the board unless you are certain you have dried the underside completely.

How do I keep my board color rich and new looking?

Every so often, you may notice the richness in color of your board begins to fade. That is a good indicator that it’s time to apply some more Aunt Katie’s Board Butter. Apply liberally on the entirety of the board with a paper towel. Remember that the board butter is completely food safe, and not only provides protection against bacterial growth, it helps to heal the cuts on your board.

What is the difference between edge and end grain?

Edge and end grain are durable, robust and can last for decades when cared for properly.

Edge grain is perfectly appropriate as both a cheese board and everyday cutting board. It is assembled using, you guessed it, the edge grain of lumber. That is to say, we take 4/4 stock lumber, and glue up several pieces in that same orientation to create a board. (Using food safe wood glue of course.)

End grain boards may be more appropriate for those who prefer a heavy duty, all-in-one type solution. End grain boards go through two glue-up processes (still food safe), as they are first glued up as an edge grain, before being crosscut into strips, which are then rotated to reveal the interior “end grain” facing up. End grain boards are easier on your knives, and tend to “self heal” better than edge grain or face grain.

Why don’t you sell face grain?

We don’t offer face grain here because they are notorious for warping, cupping and splitting (so really it’s frowny face grain). Our boards are all either edge or end grain. (Because face grain is a cheap, cost-cutting way to a bad product).

What the heck is in Aunt Katie’s Board Butter?

Mineral oil and beeswax, my friend. That’s it. Rub it on the board occasionally to refresh the wood and keep the color from fading.

How long will I have to wait to get my new board?

Not long. We ship all orders within 2-3 days. Sharpen those knives and get excited.
